A Guatemalan cemetery is as colorful as traditional dress. Shiny colors adorn the graves and the gravestones are painted in cheerful pastels. It’s a place the feels more joyous than sad, more playful than somber.
The trees & gravestones evoke the visual styles of Tim Burton and Edward Gorey – with the color palate of Guatemala.
I’ve often heard that Guatemala City and Antigua both have a big cemetery worth seeing– especially on Dia de los Muertos ( Day of the Dead)– but I chose to spend an afternoon the sunlight and colors in the cemetery of San Antonio Aqua Caliente, a tranquil village outside of Antigua. A bit off the beaten tourist path…and so worth it !
